Medicare Part D: A Comprehensive Overview

Medicare Part D provides prescription drug coverage and is an essential part of the Medicare program for those who need help managing the cost of their medications. Offered through private insurance companies approved by Medicare, Part D plans help cover both brand-name and generic drugs.

Vaccines: Many Part D plans cover commercially available vaccines not covered by Part B (like shingles vaccines).

Who Is Eligible for Medicare Part D?

You are eligible if you:

• Are enrolled in Medicare Part A and/or Part B

• Live in the service area of a Part D plan

Cost of Medicare Part D

• Premium: Monthly premiums vary by plan and location.

• Deductible: Some plans have a deductible; others may not.

• Copayments/Coinsurance: After meeting the deductible, you pay a share of the drug costs.

• Extra Help: Individuals with limited income and resources may qualify for a program called “Extra Help” to reduce premiums, deductibles, and copayments.

Coverage Stages

• Deductible Stage: You pay 100% until your deductible is met.  

• Initial Coverage Stage: You pay copays or coinsurance. ($2100 out of pocket – maximum cap).

• Catastrophic Coverage Stage: You pay $0 for generic and brand drugs.

Important Notes About Part D

• Late enrollment penalties may apply if you don’t sign up for Part D when you’re first eligible and don’t have other credible prescription drug coverage.

• Plans and formularies can change annually, so it’s important to review your plan during the Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 to December 7).
