What Medicare Part A Covers
Impatient Care
Semi-private room, meals, general nursing, and necessary hospital services and supplies.
Skilled Nursing Facility Care: Short-term skilled nursing care after a hospital stay related to injury, illness, or surgery (conditions apply).
Hospice Care: End-of-life care for patients with terminal illnesses, providing comfort-focused services.
Home Health Care: Limited services, like physical therapy, occupational therapy, and some medical supplies, if medically necessary and prescribed by a doctor.

Costs:

Premium: Most people don’t pay a monthly premium for Part A because they or their spouse paid Medicare taxes while working (this is called “premium-free Part A”).

If you haven’t paid enough Medicare taxes, you may have to pay a monthly premium (up to around $518/month in 2025.

Deductibles and Coinsurance:

For example, there’s a hospital deductible you must pay before Medicare Part A covers the rest ($1,736 per benefit period in 2026.

There are also daily coinsurance amounts if you’re in the hospital or skilled nursing facility for extended stays.

Eligibility:

You qualify at age 65 if you or your spouse worked and paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years (40 quarters).

You can also qualify earlier if you have certain disabilities or conditions (like End-Stage Renal Disease).
