Medicare Part B: A Comprehensive Overview

Medicare Part B, often referred to as “medical insurance,” is a vital part of Original Medicare. It helps cover everyday healthcare needs, focusing on outpatient services and preventive care essential to maintaining your health and managing chronic conditions.


Doctor Visits: Regular checkups and appointments with specialists.

Outpatient Care: Services you receive without being admitted to a hospital, such as emergency room or same-day surgery center services.

Preventive Services: Screenings, vaccines (like flu shots), and annual wellness visits aimed at early detection and disease prevention.

Durable Medical Equipment (DME): Items like wheelchairs, walkers, and oxygen equipment prescribed by a doctor.

Mental Health Services: Outpatient counseling, psychiatric evaluations, and therapy sessions.

Ambulance Services: Emergency ground transportation to a hospital or skilled nursing facility.

Who Is Eligible for Medicare Part B?

You are eligible for Part B if you are:

  • 65 or older and a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident

  • Under 65 with certain disabilities

  • Diagnosed with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)


Cost of Medicare Part B

  • Premium: Most beneficiaries pay a standard monthly premium. In 2026, the standard premium is $202.90, but it may be higher based on income.

  • Deductible and Coinsurance:

    • Annual deductible is $283 in 2026.

    • After meeting the deductible, you generally pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount for services.


Important Notes About Part B

  • Enrollment is automatic if you’re already receiving Social Security benefits; otherwise, you need to sign up.

  • Late enrollment penalties can apply if you don’t enroll when first eligible and don’t have other credible health coverage.

  • Part B works together with Part A to form “Original Medicare,” covering a broad range of healthcare services.
