Medicare Part A

What it covers:

  • Inpatient hospital stays
  • Skilled nursing facility care
  • Hospice care
  • Some home health care

Cost: Most people don’t pay a monthly premium for Part A if they or their spouse paid Medicare taxes while working. (Must have worked 10-years or 40-quarters).

Medicare Part B

What it covers:

  • Doctor visits
  • Outpatient care
  • Preventive services (like flu shots and screenings)
  • Durable medical equipment (wheelchairs, walkers, etc.)

Cost: There is a standard monthly premium for Part B, which may be higher depending on your income.

Medicare Part C

What it is: An alternative to Original Medicare (Parts A and B), offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare.

What it covers:

  • Everything Part A and Part B cover, plus
  • Often includes prescription drug coverage (Part D)
  • May include additional benefits like dental, vision, and wellness programs

Cost: Varies by plan and provider, but you must still pay your Part B premium.

Medicare Part D

In 2025, Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage has three stages: deductible, initial coverage, and catastrophic coverage. The coverage gap (also known as the “donut hole”) has been removed, and the annual out-of-pocket limit is capped at $2,000.

What it covers:

  • Prescription Medications
  • Vaccines
Cost of Medicare Part D
  • Premium: Monthly premiums vary by plan and location.
  • Deductible: Some plans have a deductible; others may not.
  • Copayments/Coinsurance: After meeting the deductible, you pay a share of the drug costs.
  • Extra Help: Individuals with limited income and resources may qualify for a program called “Extra Help” to reduce premiums, deductibles, and copayments.

Here’s a breakdown of each stage:
    • Deductible Stage:

You pay 100% of the cost of your covered drugs until you reach the deductible, which can vary by plan but is capped at $590 in 2025.

    • After the deductible, you pay 25% of the cost of your drugs until your out-of-pocket spending reaches $2,000. The plan and manufacturer also contribute to the cost.

Catastrophic Coverage Stage: Once your out-of-pocket spending reaches $2,000, you enter the catastrophic coverage stage, and Medicare pays 100% of your drug costs for the rest of the year.

Important Notes About Part D

  • Late enrollment penalties may apply if you don’t sign up for Part D when you’re first eligible and don’t have other credible prescription drug coverage.
  • Plans and formularies can change annually, so it’s important to review your plan during the Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 to December 7).
